We are pleased to invite you to an inspiring online session focused on Chinese Indonesian food culture and heritage. This event explores how food traditions travel, transform, and connect across generations and geographies.

Organised as part of the Diaspora in Beweging project (led by dr. Jaswina Elahi, Utrecht University), this session brings together perspectives on diasporic identity, postcolonial heritage, and cultural policy. The project is a collaboration between the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands (RCE) and Utrecht University.

What to Expect
This 90-minute session includes short presentations (10–12 minutes each) by invited experts, followed by an open discussion. Together, we will explore key questions such as:

  • How does Chinese Indonesian food culture adapt, connect, and change between and beyond home and host countries?
  • How does the concept of “heritage” function in diasporic experiences?
  • What are the existing policy frameworks—or gaps—related to this form of intangible heritage?

About the speakers

 

Amorisa Wiratri is researcher at Research Centre for Area Studies, National Research and Innovation Agency. She graduated from Gadjah Mada University for her undergraduate, Flinders University for her master’s degree, and hold PhD from University of Western Australia. Her research interests are related to migration, ethnicity, diaspora, citizenship, and border. Currently, she is appointed as Postdoctoral Fellow at ARI-NUS

Prof. dr. Lilawati Kurnia teaches at the German Studies Department and the Master of Cultural Studies Program at the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, University of Indonesia. She earned her PhD from the Faculty of Humanities, University of Indonesia in 2000 and Magistra Artium from Gesamthochschule Kassel, Germany in 1990. Her interests and research include popular culture, transculturality, diaspora studies.

 

Prof. dr. Johannes Widodao is professor at the National University of Singapore, teaching at the MA Architectural Conservation Program. Affiliations: MAAN (modern Asian Architecture Network) founder executive, AAHM (Asian Academy for Heritage Management) executive committee, UNESCO Asia Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation jury, ICOMOS ISC member, ICOMOS National Committee (Indonesia and Singapore) founder, DoCoMoMo (Macau and Singapore) founder, iNTA (International Network of Tropical Architecture) founder & executive, TCHS (The Circle for Human Sustainability) member, and SEACHA (South East Asian Cultural Heritage Alliance) founder and advisory board member.

 

Ir. Santhi H Serad, M.Sc, IPU, is a graduate of Animal Sciences from Diponegoro University and holds a Master of Science in Food Science and Technology from Curtin University of Technology, Australia. She is the author of Leaf It to Tea, a Gourmand World Cookbook Awards-winning book. With a strong career in R&D and Quality
Assurance at PT. Yupi Indo Jelly Gum, she also founded Bumi Herbal DagoBandung, a garden cultivating over 300 Indonesian herbs for education and
research.

Passionate about preserving and sharing Indonesian cuisine, Santhi established
Ramuasap & Ramurasa cooking studio and co-founded Aku Cinta Makanan
Indonesia (ACMI) to promote Indonesia’s rich culinary heritage at home and
abroad. Beyond her hands-on cooking workshops, she provides training and
mentoring for UMKM food producers and has served as an external food safety
auditor for PT. TÜV Rheinland Indonesia. An active speaker and culinary
diplomat, Santhi is also the first female Executive Director of the Institution of
Engineers Indonesia (PII), and a mentor at BINUS University and guest lecturer
at Trisakti Institute of Tourism
